Rachel Maloney (1996) lives and works in Clare/Limerick Ireland.
She Studied Fine Art at Limerick School of Art and Design, graduating in 2018. I am especially interested in figurative painting and portraiture. The idea of masks combined with this intrigues me. The weird or uncanny element to some of my work is created by the use of the mask or the idea of partially hiding the reality. I use bright, fluorescent colours in a large amount of my pieces, which often is influenced by my surroundings. We are frequently surrounded by advertising and social media with intense colours, and this can overwhelm your vision. Contrasting to these pieces, I am also very interested in nature. Something that has recently started to inspire me were the importance of trees in Celtic Mythology. Trees and nature were hugely significant to ancient Celts. In more recent years we have began to lose our respect for nature and as a result of this we are creating a climate crisis. After graduating in 2018 I traveled to Berlin, where I interned with an Artist, Wolfgang Ganter, in the Uferhallen Studios. Furthermore I have done Volunteer work at festivals which I really enjoy as they are a great space for creatives to work together. Working with an Artist to help her make a large hanging Art installation piece, and up cycling an old caravan into a new groovy home. |
